About this trip
Students will reinforce what they have learned about US History while they travel for 5 days and 4 nights to Washington, D.C., Gettysburg, and Hershey Park. It's a trip of a lifetime as they experience Arlington National Cemetery, the Lincoln Memorial, Gettysburg Military Park and so much more.We celebrate the end of the trip by having a blast at the award winning Hershey Park.

American History Relevance: D.C. is the ultimate symbol of the American Republic and its continuity. It is the geographic and political center where national laws are made, presidents are inaugurated, and the nation's most profound historical crises (Civil War, Civil Rights) are memorialized through iconic monuments like the Lincoln Memorial and the U.S. Capitol.

Mount Vernon, VA

Mount Vernon is the historic, sprawling plantation estate on the Potomac River that served as the beloved home and final resting place of George Washington, America's military commander, and first President.

American History Relevance: Mount Vernon is profoundly relevant because it preserves the private life of the nation's founder, offering insight into his roles as a sophisticated farmer, entrepreneur, and a slave owner who, late in life, uniquely mandated the eventual emancipation of his enslaved people in his will. The estate also holds political significance as the site of the Mount Vernon Conference of 1785, a trade meeting between Virginia and Maryland that set the direct precedent for the Annapolis Convention and ultimately the Constitutional Convention.

Gettysburg, PA

Gettysburg is the site of the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, which was the largest and most destructive military engagement fought in North America during the American Civil War.

American History Relevance: The battle is considered the decisive turning point of the Civil War, as the massive Union victory here crippled Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army and ended his crucial invasion of the North, ensuring the ultimate preservation of the Union. Furthermore, it is the location where President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address, a short but powerful speech that elevated the war's purpose from merely saving the Union to a grander struggle for human equality and the validation of democracy itself.

Hershey Park, PA

Hershey Park is a large amusement park founded in 1906 by Milton S. Hershey, the entrepreneur and founder of the Hershey Chocolate Company, originally established as a place of recreation for his factory workers.

American History Relevance: Hershey Park and the town surrounding it represent a classic example of American industrial paternalism, corporate community building, and the rise of mass consumer culture in the early 20th century. Milton Hershey built the town of Hershey as a model community, providing workers with housing, schools, and cultural amenities, reflecting a philosophy where business owners felt a responsibility to provide a high quality of life—including leisure at the park—for their employees who powered American industry.

Michigan

Michigan is a unique two-peninsula state deeply tied to the Great Lakes region's Native American, French, and British colonial history, with its major population center, Detroit, founded by the French in 1701. The state was heavily reliant on its rich natural resources—specifically fur trading, copper and iron mining in the Upper Peninsula, and logging—before transforming into a global industrial powerhouse.

American History Relevance: Michigan's most profound contribution to American history is its identity as the center of the U.S. automotive industry, particularly in Detroit, where entrepreneurs like Henry Ford pioneered the assembly line and mass production. This industrial might not only fueled the rise of the American middle class but also earned the state the nickname the "Arsenal of Democracy" during World War II, as its factories retooled to produce the vast majority of the tanks, planes, and weaponry necessary for the Allied victory. The state's history also encompasses significant labor movements, including the rise of the United Auto Workers (UAW), and served as a critical route on the Underground Railroad into Canada.
